Campaign Story

Help keep the annual Christmas Revels tradition alive this December with a surprising, entertaining, and safe alternative for our community!
Revels North asks for your support as we raise $20,000 to help finance The Christmas Revels Festival, December 17- 19 in downtown Lebanon, NH. This festival will include a free outdoor Christmas Revels production in the heart of Lebanon at Colburn Park, each day from 4:00-6:00pm. Our outdoor celebration will include many of the elements audiences have come to expect from The Christmas Revels since 1975.

Along with the outdoor event, we hope to offer five reduced-capacity ticketed performances that weekend inside Lebanon Opera House (if COVID-19 allows) by three different musical acts sure to delight our audiences and give them an additional incentive to make the trip to downtown Lebanon. The Festival's schedule will maximize the opportunity for downtown Lebanon businesses and restaurants to benefit from the audience who travels to this Festival during the holiday season.

When it became clear in 2020 that a live production of The Christmas Revels would not be possible due to COVID-19, we instead created an animated short film, The Christmas Revels: All Shall Be Well Again, which we made widely available to the community for free on CATV and NH PBS. Crowdfunding support through The Local Crowd Upper Valley helped make last year’s film possible, and we anticipate similar community interest in this year’s free outdoor event.

We have three goals for The Christmas Revels Festival:

1. Keep the annual Christmas Revels tradition alive for our audience by creating a surprising, entertaining, and safe alternative to our standard theatrical production, as we did in 2020 with the animated film. We recognize that many families have felt severe financial hardship due to COVID-19, so creating a free Christmas Revels experience this year will help bring joy to their holidays in a safe environment. This event will also offer people a chance to safely gather with the community to celebrate, an opportunity that has been largely unavailable during the pandemic. Research shows that outdoor transmission of COVID-19 is far less likely than indoor transmission, which has prompted Revels North to create this outdoor event.

2. Provide work opportunities for those in the arts, especially New Hampshire and Vermont artists. Those who make a living in the creative sector have been hard hit by COVID-19, and both the outdoor and indoor events will create jobs for these artists. Although we are a lean non-profit operation, with only one full-time staff and dependent on volunteers for much of our success, we are proud to have created jobs in 2019 for 25 different people, including several independent artists, for their work on The Christmas Revels, paying them a total of just over $35,000. This was in addition to the union workers Lebanon Opera House brought in to support the production. The Christmas Revels is not only an economic catalyst for the region, but also one for the individuals involved in bringing the magic to life.

3. Use this outdoor celebration to build a new audience for the hopeful return of the standard production to Lebanon Opera House in 2022. Our vision is for The Christmas Revels to become Lebanon’s signature seasonal event and that our audience becomes a vital catalyst to our new Lebanon home growing its artistic economy, following us to downtown Lebanon every December during the holiday season. The indoor/outdoor concept for this December helps local businesses this year while building a foundation for a stronger future.

    Dance with the Daffodils

Come dance with daffodils, play with puppets, and lend your voice to our chorus as we present “Lighted Candles in the Winter Trees,” December 17-19 at Colburn Park in Lebanon, NH, a free performance that is part of The Christmas Revels Festival.

This year’s show is presented entirely outdoors at Colburn Park. We’ll have a mainstage event at 4 pm and 5:30 pm each day, preceded by sideshows that include a band of roving singers, jugglers, storytellers, mummers and dancers, and concluding with a display of the fire organ.

Our mainstage show is a collaboration between Revels North and No Strings Marionette Company. This show brings to life some familiar (Dona Nobis, Lord of the Dance) and new (Bells of Norwich) music of the Revels canon through images and puppets brought to life by the No Strings Marionette Company. We’ll pass the wassail bowl, ring out the bells, dance Lord of the Dance and harness the power of the dragon to fight for the good of all.

Meet the Jack Langstaff puppet created for last year’s film version of the Christmas Revels, All Shall Be Well Again, along with a host of other characters created by the No Strings Marionette Company. The show is narrated by the Revel North chorus, providing all the vocals through song.

“Lighted Candles in the Winter Trees,” and all of the Festival’s events at Colburn Park, are free to all. Limited seating is available by reservation for donations starting at $35. Your donation helps make this celebration available to the community for free while also supporting the artists and professionals who are bringing this festival to life. Make a donation and reserve your seats today!

If you have already donated to Revels North in 2021 and would like to reserve seats, please contact Brian Cook at cook@revelsnorth.org.

Come ready to let go of the old, and turn towards the light. All are welcome.
